100 Years of History
About to celebrate it’s 100 Year Anniversary, the Gunter has seen it’s share of dignitaries, historical events and upgrades and is even a member of the National Register of Historical Sites.
The original, eight-story hotel was constructed from 1907-1909 and now has grown to a 12-story building with a basement and detached parking.
Originally opened on November 21, 1909 and financed by Jot Gunter, the property envisioned as “a large tourist hotel for the city.” Significant events include the founding of the United States Automobile Association (USAA), one of the nation’s leading insurance companies and Blues legend Robert Johnson recording some of his most famous works at the Gunter in 1936.
Some of the world’s most famous people have stayed at the Gunter Hotel, including the likes of Mae West, John Wayne, Joe Dimaggio, President Harry Truman, First Ladies Nancy Reagan and Lady Bird Johnson, and General John Pershing.
A Timeless Treasure
The boutique hotel features a Victorian-style pub with lead glass windows and a long oak bar. Live music is performed at McLeod’s on Friday and Saturday evenings. American regional cuisine is served at the on-site Barron’s restaurant and the Sheraton Gunter Bakery serves fresh pastries and Starbucks coffee. Original preserved features of the hotel include a switchboard, barbershop and opulent antique furnishings. The hotel includes an outdoor pool and spa tub nestled in a courtyard with city views. A limited-hour fitness center houses cardiovascular and weight-training equipment.
The hotel’s 322 guestrooms feature Sheraton Sweet Sleeper beds with plush-top mGunter Hotel Restaurantattresses, and down duvets and pillows. Accommodations reflect Metropolitan décor in hues of navy blue, burgandy and beige. Bathrooms are stocked with Shine by Bliss toiletries. High-speed wired and wireless Internet access is available, for a fee.

The Gunter is a great choice of lodging for theatergoers because it stands across the street from the Majestic Theatre. This beautifully restored stage hosts the San Antonio Symphony, touring Broadway productions and world-renowned concert artists.
