El Paso, Texas:A West Texas City with Charm, History and Charisma
El Paso’s history is ingrained in the lifeline of Texas and Mexico. The city grew from earlier settlements dating back to the Juan de Oñate expedition in 1598 and a settlement by Juan Maria Ponce de León in 1827, although area missions predate that civil settlement by almost 150 years. El Paso is the largest United States city on the Mexican border and neighboring Juárez, is Mexico’s largest border city. The combined populations are about two million.

Located in El Paso’s Lower Valley, are three stately adobe churches that remain as living testaments to the faith of the Spanish and Indian ancestors. The Ysleta Mission, established in 1682, is the cornerstone of the Ysleta del Sur Indian Pueblo. Two miles east on Socorro Road is the Socorro Mission, first built in 1682. Six miles farther east is the San Elizario Chapel that was established in 1789.
A City of Attractions.
El Paso has a myriad of things to do on your trip. From incredible Soutwestern landscapes, to cultural sites to sporting events, the city has a vibrancy about it that exudes uniqueness.
You can’t go to El Paso and not visit the Magoffin Homestead. The home is an 1875 territorial style homestead of one of El Paso’s prominent founders. The homestead is still preserved as a museum with original family artifacts.
Plan on visiting McKelligon Canyon Park & Amphitheatre. This 90-acre park, located in El Paso’s Franklin Mountains, is open to hikers and picnickers. A special feature of the park is the 1,500-seat amphitheatre, surrounded on three sides by dramatic canyon walls. A variety of concerts, a Shakespeare Festival and the VIVA EL PASO! outdoor musical drama are presented here each summer.
Downtown Walking Tour.
A 90-minute, self-guided walking tour beginning in San Jacinto Plaza, original site of Ponce de Leon’s ranch, winding through El Paso’s downtown historic district and ending on Mills Street at the Kress Building, home of the famous dime store from 1938-1997.
The tour includes several architecturally identifiable buildings, many of them designed by notable architect Henry C. Trost. For instance, the once elegant, and restored Plaza Theatre with its unique twinkling-star-and-floating-cloud ceiling is a can’t miss. Then, visit the beautifully-restored Camino Real Hotel with its stained-glass dome ceiling, and other noteworthy buildings mastering many architectural styles.
